My Summer Vacation

If you are like me, you want your vacation to be an escape from the normal routine. Vacation is an opportunity to repair and renew yourself.

The Beautiful Lake Como

Last month, my husband and I hiked through the Italian Lake region with the touring group, Butterfield and Robinson. Not strangers to Italy, we had been to Rome, Venice, and Florence many times, and spent a week in Sicily and a week in Tuscany. The Italian Lake region offers ideal hiking because of the spectacular natural beauty and moderate climate.
Here is our group, gathered
around a 250 year old tree!

The terrain varies from narrow paths through wooded areas to cobblestone streets to wide hiking trails – all with views of the sparkling blue lakes.

Our hiking group of fourteen was enthusiastic and fit – easily covering the daily 8 mile hikes.  Most signed on for the extra optional hikes. One couple, who were less physically fit, did shorter hikes. But they hiked. They did not stay home or choose an inactive vacation. They signed on to hike because they knew it would be good for them. And, of course, it was. They became stronger. And that’s the message: Sometimes people hold back from trying an activity or sport because they feel they aren’t athletic, and that is wrong. Never hold back because you don’t think you are “good enough”. If you ever doubt this wisdom, take a look at the NY Marathon competitors in wheel chairs and those with artificial legs. Be inspired!

Challenge yourself. Try something new. You will get stronger by moving outside your comfort zone. You are stronger than you realize.

Remember to eat well and stay hydrated!
